Arthritis of the spine can affect any of the joints in the vertebrae which provide support for the spine. The vertebrae consists of individual bones which are joined together by discs, which absorb shock, allow movement and provide cushioning.
The Different Types of Arthritis affecting the
Spine are Osteoarthritis:
It is the most common arthritis affecting the spine and it slowly leads to degeneration of the cartilage and may affect the multiple joints. This be accompanied by overgrowth of bone and the formation of bone spurs.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: It is a systemic condition causing inflammation of the joint cartilage leading to its destruction, this normally affects many joints on both sides of the body. This can affect people at an earlier age and is often accompanied by enlargement of the soft tissues.
Ankylosing Spondylitis: It
Develops over many years and usually starts in the area where the spine attaches to the pelvis. This can also gradually progress to the upper spine and spread to other major joints like the shoulders and hips.
Risk Factors for Developing Arthritis of the
Spine Include
• As a person ages the healing ability of the body decreases and developing arthritis at that time can make the disease progress much faster. Persons over 50 years of age are more prone to developing spine arthritis.
• Overweight puts excess load on the joints making a person prone to spine arthritis.
• Overuse of the joints by activities involving inappropriate bending and lifting
• Prior injury or trauma makes a person more susceptible to developing spine arthritis.
• Heredity or family history.
• Sex or gender or the person, with women being more at risk.
