Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by a general feeling of fatigue, pain and tenderness which is widespread. The word fibro means fibre, myo means muscle and algia means pain in Latin. This condition can be accompanied by a wide variety of symptoms. 

Risk Factors
There are more incidences of Fibromyalgia in women than in men. Men and children can sometimes develop this condition. People in their middle ages are more prone to developing fibromyalgia. Other factors which increase the risk for fibromyalgia are family history and the presence of a rheumatic disease like arthritis.

Symptoms
The symptoms associated with fibromyalgia can be varied depending on many factors such as changes in physical activity, stress and weather. 

 

Some of These Symptoms are
• Muscular pain. Fibromyalgia is accompanied by widespread tenderness and pain in the body. Especially in areas such as the back and the neck, shoulders, hips, arms, knees and legs. 
Sleep problems.

•  Another symptom of fibromyalgia is disturbed sleep and fatigue upon waking. 
• Headaches. Stiffness and tenderness in the facial muscles, neck and shoulders, especially in the jaw area accompanied by headaches. 
• IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome). Irregular bowel movements, bloating and abdominal pain often accompany fibromyalgia.
• Other signs and symptoms include a tingling sensation in the hands and feet, painful menstrual periods, mood changes and concentration problems.

Causes
There may be a number of causes for fibromyalgia. 


• Changes in certain chemical associated with depression, pain and anxiety.
• Sleep patterns which are disturbed.
• Repetitive injuries or trauma.
• Illnesses, infections and certain diseases.
• Changes in the nervous system as well as in metabolism of the muscles.

 

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of fibromyalgia may be difficult as other causes for the symptoms have to be ruled out. A series of medical tests have to be conducted to diagnose fibromyalgia. The tests will include blood tests, X-rays and other tests to rule out conditions like arthritis. The doctor conducts a complete physical examination and looks into the patient’s medical history and the symptoms reported.
