CT (Computerized Tomography) Scan:
This procedure is also used in producing images of cross-sections of the body. This test produces images which are more detailed than an MRI. A dye may be injected to perform this test which appears white on the scan to identify distinct areas. This test is not as safe as an MRI and can pose a few risks and cause infections of the spine and also expose you to more radiation.

Treatment
Patients are educated in self-care methods which are most often extremely effective in easing pain and treating sciatica. Some of the ways to treat sciatica are:

Cold and Hot Packs: Using cold packs in the affected area three or four times a day provides relief and eases inflammation in the initial stages of sciatic pain. If this does not ease the pain, a hot pack can be applied after a couple of days to the inflamed areas. Cold and hot pack can be alternatively be used if the pain continues.

Stretching, Physical Therapy and/or Regular Exercise: Gentle stretching can ease the pain in your lower back if done regularly and help you feel better. Your doctor or physical therapist can prescribe a rehabilitation program and help you recover faster and prevent future injuries. Exercise releases feel-good hormones such as endorphins, helps improve flexibility and ease stiffness. Sudden high impact activities as well as improper exercising techniques must be avoided and proper ways to gradually increase your activity must be learned by consulting certified trainers and specialists.

Medications: Pain relievers such as NSAIDs which are over-the-counter medications can help temporarily control pain. Some of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Asprin and Tylenol can provide relief but should not be taken in excess as they can cause side effects such as ulcers or stomach bleeding. The doctor could prescribe anti-inflammatory medicine with muscle relaxants if the pain is more severe.

In more severe cases of sciatica epidural injections or surgery may be required.
